ECOUREA is an expert when it comes to providing guidance on complying with environmental legislation. We have to be. This knowledge and expertise come to the fore when working on projects with our clients. 

We recently worked on a project involving Tier III international vessels. An international transiting vessel received its ships engine classification strictly under Tier III compliance. In order to continue to remain compliant, it must use Marine Urea® in conjunction with its engines (excluding auxiliary engines).

Whilst traversing the Pacific Ocean en route to Polynesia, our client’s vessel found it was running short of Marine Urea®. This brought not only operational and environmental problems but also non-compliance with a marine classification requirement.

If the vessel was not successfully operating with Marine Urea then its classification would become void and the vessel would no longer remain compliant under the IMO. By the time vessel reached the remote island of Tahiti there was a distinct possibility that it would run out of Marine Urea® completely.

ECOUREA was brought in to resolve this problem. We established a close and frequent dialogue with the vessel’s crew and agents to ensure that any Marine Urea® bunkering could take place locally (Tahiti).

Prior to departing, our team reviewed the documentation issues, familiarised themselves with the scenarios, and then travelled to Tahiti. We coordinated and managed the bunkering in the remote location. We also provided guidance on compliance documentation – ensuring everything was in place before the next stage of the journey. This would enable the vessel to successfully navigate the Panama Canal on its outbound journey to Europe.

Under the guidance and careful calculations of the on-site ECOUREA team, the vessel’s engineers bunkered enough product to enable them to transit through to their next European port. The ECOUREA team allowed for sailing speeds, fuel consumption and other variables. 

Once the vessel was at a more accessible port in Europe it was bunkered again directly from one of ECOUREA’s local factories. We maintained contact for the remainder of the journey and logged all activities and decisions as a blueprint for further, similar, actions in the more remote parts of the globe.
